In the Boom Studios comics, we pick up the story after the arrival of Lord Zedd. While the rest of the team have received the Thunderzord upgrades, Tommy is losing his Green Ranger powers.
It is in this period of uncertainty that Jason encounters the Blue Emissary, a mysterious being whose form constantly shifts between all of the Blue Rangers in existence. It explains that while they had met during the Shattered Grid event, the resolution meant that all of the Rangers lost their memories of what happened.
In addition, while the Grid re-formed, it was not without faults and cracks, which meant that Morphin Grid energy was seeping out uncontrollably.
The Blue Emissary then entreats Jason for his leadership in solving this problem and unlocks his memories. The process leads Jason to confront Drakkon in his mind, and in doing so, gives him a soft glimpse of the future.
Because of this, Jason accepts the offer and declares that he needs to build a new team, because what was to come would threaten not just Earth, but everything!
There is more to come in this arc, but for now you know that while in the TV series, it was for a peace summit, this is the real reason that Jason, Zack, and Trini left the team.
