Did you know that the Dragon Shield was not originally part of the Green Ranger’s powers?
In the Boom Studios comics, the Dragon Power Coin is stolen from Ninjor by a thief sent by Rita. When the thief morphed, the Green Ranger is seen without the Dragon Shield. Rita then captured and sealed him away with the Power Coin—intending for it to be a trump card.
Tens of thousands of years later, Rita decides to finally create her own Green Ranger and retrieves the coin. However, she is unable to unlock it with any of her spells, so she summons the spirit of her mother, Lady Fienna, in an attempt to trick her into revealing the Power Coin’s secrets.
Rita is able to learn that Zordon alone holds the key, but that in certain situations, they could be unlocked by worthy individuals that possess courage, strength, and honor.
An attempt by her henchmen to kidnap someone on Earth with those qualities for Rita to sacrifice fails. Angered, Rita resorts to her last option: reviving someone required that their spirit is strong and that their soul is worthy.
With that fact, Rita casts a spell to sacrifice what remained of her mother, fuse that energy with the Dragon Coin, and finally unlock it.
But, as a manifestation of Fienna’s dying promise to watch over Rita, the armor that she wore becomes the shield that protects the Green Ranger!
