In the Boom Studios comics, we flashback to tens of thousands of years ago, where a warrior named Zophram is being named Supreme Guardian of Eltar: a position of immense power entrusted to an individual in order to fight Dark Specter.
The new Supreme Guardian, with a young Zordon under his command, leads the Eltarians to the world of Bandoria. They find a palace that houses the fabled Zeo Crystal. The discovery of the Zeo Crystal leads to many attempts by Dark Specter to seize the weapon.
One such attempt almost ends in the death of Zordon, which Zophram interprets as more failure on his own part. Enraged at the refusal of the Council to grant him access to the Zeo Crystal, he tries to take it by force.
Upon touching the Crystal, Zophram is immediately stricken with an powerful curse that flay all the skin off of his body!
He is able to flee with what remained of his life, but the experience and his rage transforms him completely. Casting off his former identity, Zophram becomes Lord Zedd, the Emperor of Evil.
Yet, it is not all that simple. Someone had sabotaged the Crystal and succeeded in turning Zedd against Zordon. Who that person is or why they did it is a story for another time, but first you will have to get over the shock of finding out that Lord Zedd is an Eltar just like Zordon!
