In the tv show, Tommy’s time as the Green Ranger came to an end when Lord Zedd was able to create his own team of evil Power Rangers by stealing Tommy’s powers. Unfortunately, without the time nor budget, the Dark Rangers did not do much other than stand around looking like dollar store gimps.
So when the opportunity arose in the Boom Studios comics, the creators were able to do a second version of the Dark Rangers.
Similar to the show, Lord Zedd sent out a monster that absorbed the Rangers’ Power Blast as it died, recharging the Green Chaos Crystal that was hidden in its body. Zedd then used the energy to empower Rita’s henchmen with Morphin Grid energy, turning them into new Dark Rangers.
Goldar became Dark Ranger Yellow. Squat was Blue, Baboo was the Black Dark Ranger, and Finster—Pink. Zedd also needed a leader for this team, so he made a clone of Rita from a special batch of putty, creating Dark Ranger Red.
The second version of Dark Rangers were far more formidable and even had their own animalistic Terrorzords!
The Power Rangers were on the verge of defeat until the arrival of a new Green Ranger, who smashed the Green Chaos Crystal, severing the Dark Rangers’ power source.
The aftermath saw the disappearance of the Rita clone and left the Rangers wondering: who is the new Green Ranger?
But none of that would have been possible if the comic creators never wondered, "what if Rita’s henchmen became Power Rangers?"
